Major Boost to Connectivity

The newly launched 20-coach Vande Bharat Express will cover a distance of 267 kilometres, significantly reducing travel time between Jammu and Srinagar. The service is expected to serve as a dependable all-weather alternative to the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which often faces disruptions due to landslides, shooting stones, and adverse weather conditions.

The flag-off ceremony was attended by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh, underlining the importance of the project for the region.

A 70-Year-Old Dream Realised

The railway link connecting the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India had remained an unfulfilled dream for over seven decades. The ambitious ₹43,780 crore Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, initiated in the late 1990s, is considered one of the most challenging railway engineering feats in the world.

The project involved constructing 36 tunnels spanning 119 km and 943 bridges across the rugged Pir Panjal mountain range. Engineers and workers overcame extreme geographical and climatic challenges to complete this landmark infrastructure.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier inaugurated the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat service in June 2025. The latest extension to Jammu Tawi railway station completes the critical link, integrating the Valley more closely with the national railway network.

Modern Features & Passenger Comfort

Built using indigenous technology, the Vande Bharat Express offers world-class amenities to passengers. The train is equipped with the ‘Kavach’ safety system, GPS-based passenger information systems, and comfortable rotating seats for an enhanced travel experience.

Railway officials confirmed that the service will operate six days a week, with no trains running on Tuesdays. During the inaugural run, trains from both Jammu and Srinagar were operated simultaneously, demonstrating operational readiness.

Economic and Tourism Impact

The new train service is expected to significantly boost tourism in Kashmir by making travel more convenient and accessible. It will also facilitate the movement of goods, including agricultural produce like fruits, ensuring minimal disruption during highway closures.

Students, traders, and business communities in the region are likely to benefit from improved connectivity, enhancing economic activities across Jammu and Kashmir.

Transforming Rail Infrastructure

The launch marks another milestone in the ongoing transformation of railway infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. The Udhampur-Katra section was commissioned in 2014, while the Valley witnessed its first electric train in February 2024. A dedicated Jammu Railway Division was also established in January 2025.

Additionally, key stations such as Jammu Tawi, Katra, Udhampur, and Budgam are being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to improve passenger facilities.

The completion of the USBRL project ensures that the region remains connected even during adverse weather conditions, reducing dependency on road transport. With the launch of the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, Indian Railways has taken a significant step toward strengthening connectivity, boosting tourism, and unlocking new economic opportunities for the Kashmir Valley.
