The interaction underscored the growing concern over road traffic accidents in Tripura, where accident rates and fatalities continue to remain above the national average. Dr. Sanjay highlighted the urgent need for awareness, preventive measures, and responsible road behavior to reduce avoidable deaths and injuries.

Road Accidents a Major Public Health Challenge

During discussions with the Governor, Dr. Sanjay pointed out that road traffic accidents remain one of the most significant public health challenges in India. He noted that nearly 90 percent of road accidents are linked to driver negligence, with over speeding emerging as a major contributing factor both in Tripura and across the country.

He emphasized that reducing road fatalities requires collective efforts involving citizens, institutions, law enforcement agencies, and policymakers.

Address to Medical Students at Tripura Medical College

As part of his visit, Dr. Sanjay delivered a special lecture on road safety at Tripura Medical College. The session received an enthusiastic response from students, faculty members, and healthcare professionals.

The programme was organized under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Arindam Dutta, Principal of Tripura Medical College, and CEO Mr. Swapna Dutta. Coordination of the event was carried out by Prof. Pradeep Kumar Das, Head of the Department of Microbiology.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Sanjay expressed concern over the increasing number of road accidents in the region, which continue to claim lives and cause long-term emotional and financial hardship for affected families.

Future Doctors Must Lead by Example

Encouraging students to become ambassadors of road safety, Dr. Sanjay urged them to strictly follow traffic regulations and inspire others to do the same.

He stressed the importance of wearing helmets while riding two-wheelers and using seat belts while driving four-wheelers. According to him, future healthcare professionals have a responsibility not only to treat injuries but also to promote preventive measures that save lives.

“Medical students are future nation builders. Their role extends beyond hospitals and clinics to creating awareness and fostering responsible behavior in society,” he said.

Discipline and Responsibility Key to Professional Success

Dr. Sanjay identified drunken driving, fatigue, distracted driving, and over speeding as some of the leading causes of road accidents, particularly during night travel and in hilly terrains.

He concluded by reminding students that true professional excellence is achieved through a combination of knowledge, discipline, ethical conduct, and social responsibility. Promoting road safety, he said, is an essential part of building a healthier and safer nation.

The visit highlighted the importance of integrating public health awareness with medical education and community engagement to address one of India’s most pressing preventable causes of death and injury.
