Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal will undertake an official visit to India from June 5 to June 7 at the invitation of India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, with bilateral cooperation in connectivity, energy, trade and investment expected to dominate discussions.

The visit marks Shisir Khanal’s first official trip to India since Nepal’s current government assumed office on March 27. According to Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visit is part of the regular exchange of high-level engagements between the two neighbouring countries and aims to strengthen their long-standing partnership.

Connectivity Projects High on Agenda
A key focus of the visit will be improving connectivity between Nepal and India through railway, road, air and people-to-people links.
Officials familiar with the discussions said bilateral talks scheduled for June 6 will explore ways to accelerate several infrastructure projects. These include the proposed Raxaul-Kathmandu Railway, which has already undergone a detailed feasibility study with Indian assistance.
Nepal is also expected to push for shorter international air routes through Indian airspace for its newly built international airports in Pokhara and Lumbini. At present, Nepal relies heavily on a single major southern entry point for most international flights.
The discussions come shortly after Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane’s visit to India, during which he emphasized the importance of seamless connectivity, digital corridors and stronger civilizational ties between the two countries.
Trade, Investment and Energy Cooperation
Foreign Minister Khanal and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar are expected to discuss measures to deepen economic cooperation, increase trade and investment flows and expand energy collaboration.
The visit is particularly significant in the context of the long-term power trade agreement signed during the seventh Nepal-India Joint Commission meeting in January 2024. Under the agreement, India committed to purchasing 10,000 MW of electricity from Nepal over a period of ten years.
Officials believe the current visit could help prepare the groundwork for the eighth meeting of the Nepal-India Joint Commission, a key bilateral mechanism led by the foreign ministers of both countries.

Focus on Pending Bilateral Projects
According to reports, both sides are likely to review progress on several pending projects, including the Pancheshwar Multipurpose Project, the East-West Railway and the proposed Janakpur-Ayodhya railway connection.
Trade and transit-related issues are also expected to feature prominently in the discussions as both countries seek to enhance economic integration and regional connectivity.
Border Issue Not on Official Agenda
Despite recent public debate surrounding border disputes involving the regions of Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura and Kalapani, Nepali officials have indicated that the issue is not expected to be formally discussed during Khanal’s visit.
Instead, the focus will remain on development-oriented diplomacy and strengthening practical cooperation in areas that directly benefit citizens of both countries.
As Nepal and India continue to deepen economic and strategic ties, the visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to several long-pending projects and reinforce cooperation across multiple sectors.
