India Reaffirms Safe AI Vision at UN Global AI Dialogue:

India has reaffirmed its commitment to building a future where Artificial Intelligence (AI) remains safe, secure, trustworthy and inclusive. Addressing delegates at the UN forum on Tuesday, Singh outlined India’s vision of ensuring that AI technologies benefit humanity while preventing misuse and protecting democratic values.

India Calls for Responsible AI Governance

During his address, Singh said that responsible AI governance should rest on strong foundational principles, including preserving human oversight, safeguarding human rights and preventing AI from being misused.

He noted that these principles, which were also highlighted during the recent India AI Impact Summit, are essential to ensuring AI systems operate across borders in ethical, secure and beneficial ways.

According to the minister, AI governance must promote innovation without compromising safety or accountability.

India’s ‘AI for All’ Vision

Singh highlighted that India’s National Strategy for AI and National AI Governance Guidelines reflect the country’s vision of “AI for All.” The approach seeks to ensure that technological progress supports inclusive growth while encouraging innovation rather than restricting it.
He also pointed out that countries in the Global South continue to face significant capacity gaps, making it difficult for them to participate effectively in shaping global AI policies. Bridging these gaps, he said, is essential for creating a truly inclusive global AI ecosystem.

United Nations Must Lead Global AI Cooperation

Emphasising the importance of multilateral cooperation, Singh said the United Nations remains the world’s foremost platform for building global consensus on issues that affect all nations.

He remarked that while machines do not create conflicts over borders, ideology or pride, humans do. Therefore, AI governance frameworks should reflect unity of purpose and ensure that technological advancements do not outpace diplomacy.

The minister described the ongoing Global Dialogue as more than just another international conference, calling it a defining opportunity for governments, international organisations and the private sector to choose consensus over conflict.

AI Can Drive Progress or Deepen Inequality

Singh warned that the decisions taken in the coming years will determine whether AI becomes a powerful tool for equitable development or amplifies existing global inequalities.
He urged stakeholders across the world to work together in establishing transparent, ethical and inclusive AI governance mechanisms that benefit all societies.

The UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance, which began this week in Geneva, is a universal multi-stakeholder forum established under UN General Assembly Resolution 79/325, following the adoption of the Global Digital Compact as part of the Pact of the Future in September 2024.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the dialogue aims to strengthen international cooperation and build a shared framework for governing Artificial Intelligence responsibly in the years ahead.
