Vijay’s TVK Stuns Tamil Nadu:

Ending nearly six decades of Dravidian dominance in Tamil Nadu politics, actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has emerged as the surprise winner in the 2026 Assembly elections. Contesting its maiden election, the party has made a dramatic entry and established itself as a major political force in the state.

TVK Falls Short of Majority

Despite its impressive performance, TVK has fallen short of the simple majority required to form the government on its own. In the 234-member Assembly, a party needs at least 118 seats to secure a clear mandate. TVK is currently leading in 108 constituencies, leaving it 10 seats short of the halfway mark.

Adding to the challenge, Vijay has won from two constituencies — Perambur and Tiruchy East — and will have to vacate one seat, effectively reducing the party’s tally. Moreover, one MLA will be appointed as Speaker, who typically does not vote during a confidence motion unless there is a tie. This further reduces the party’s effective voting strength.

As a result, TVK will require the support of at least 12 additional legislators to comfortably prove its majority on the floor of the House.

Alliance Arithmetic Becomes Crucial

The post-poll scenario suggests that smaller parties and alliances could play a decisive role in government formation. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance has secured a fragmented mandate. The Congress has won six seats, while Left parties such as CPI and CPI(M) have secured two seats each. Other parties, including the Indian Union Muslim League and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, have also gained representation.

On the other side, the AIADMK-led front has returned with modest numbers. Allies such as the Pattali Makkal Katchi and the Bharatiya Janata Party have managed to win a handful of seats.

If TVK manages to secure support from even a section of these parties, it could cross the majority mark. Notably, it does not require the backing of all alliance partners; support from a smaller group of legislators would be sufficient.

Governor’s Next Move

Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar is expected to initiate the government formation process soon. He may invite Vijay to stake a claim and prove his majority on the Assembly floor or ask him to submit letters of support from allied parties.

If TVK fails to demonstrate majority support, the Governor could invite the second-largest party, the DMK, to explore forming the government. In case no party is able to establish a stable majority, the state may face President’s Rule, followed by fresh elections within six months.
