During his visit, Jaishankar called on Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness and conveyed greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The discussions focused on strengthening political, economic, and people-to-people ties between the two nations.
Jaishankar appreciated the Jamaican leadership’s commitment to enhancing bilateral relations and highlighted the importance of sustained engagement between the two countries.
India Gifts BHISHM Cubes
In a significant gesture of friendship, Jaishankar formally handed over 10 BHISHM Cubes — mobile hospital systems designed for rapid deployment during emergencies. The handover took place in the presence of Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Health Minister Chris Tufton, and Foreign Minister Kamina J. Smith.
The BHISHM Cube system is expected to enhance Jamaica’s disaster preparedness and response capabilities, particularly during natural calamities and emergencies.
Expanding Strategic Cooperation
Jaishankar also held detailed bilateral talks with his Jamaican counterpart Kamina J. Smith and other Cabinet Ministers. The discussions covered a wide range of sectors including education, healthcare, agriculture, digital technology, tourism, sports, infrastructure, and capacity building.

Focus on Business and Economic Ties
The External Affairs Minister interacted with Jamaican industry leaders and met Industry Minister Aubyn Hill, emphasising the need to strengthen economic partnerships.
He highlighted that as countries diversify their trade and seek reliable partners, India and Jamaica have significant untapped potential for economic cooperation, both bilaterally and regionally.
Caribbean Outreach Continues
Jaishankar’s visit to Jamaica is part of a broader Caribbean outreach. He is scheduled to visit Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago as well.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, these nations share a historical connection with India due to the presence of Girmitiya communities. These communities trace their roots to Indian indentured labourers who migrated to Caribbean countries during the 19th century and later settled there.
The visit underscores India’s continued efforts to strengthen diplomatic, cultural, and economic ties with Caribbean nations.
