PM Modi Highlights Railways Transformation
The Prime Minister shared an article by Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, which detailed how Indian Railways has revamped its safety ecosystem over the past decade. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the transformation reflects a clear policy direction combined with continuous investment and modern technology adoption.
The statement emphasized that for millions of Indians, rail travel is not just a choice but a necessity, making safety a matter of public trust rather than just a technical metric.
‘Safety First’ Policy Delivers Results
The reforms stem from a “Safety First” approach adopted during the early years of the Modi government. This policy has driven a systematic overhaul of railway infrastructure, operations, and monitoring systems.
As a result, the number of train accidents has seen a dramatic decline. From 135 accidents recorded in 2014-15, the figure has dropped to just 16 in 2025-26, marking an impressive 89 per cent reduction.
Improved Safety Despite Higher Traffic
What makes this achievement notable is that the decline in accidents has occurred even as train operations and passenger volumes have increased significantly over the years.
The consequential accident index, which measures accidents per unit of train running distance, has also improved sharply—from 0.11 to 0.01—indicating a safer railway system for every kilometre travelled.
Reduction in Casualties
The safety improvements have also translated into fewer fatalities. In 2014-15, rail accidents claimed 292 lives, whereas in 2025-26, the number dropped to 16 lives lost in 16 accidents.
These figures underline the impact of targeted investments and technological interventions in enhancing passenger safety.

Lifeline for Millions
Indian Railways continues to serve as a vital lifeline for the country, transporting over two crore passengers daily. From office-goers and students to migrant workers and families, millions rely on the network for their daily commute and long-distance travel.
A Tech-Driven Future
According to Ashwini Vaishnaw, the transformation of Indian Railways has been driven by a combination of clear policy vision, consistent funding, and the adoption of modern technology.
As India moves forward, the government aims to further strengthen the railway system, ensuring higher efficiency, improved safety, and enhanced passenger experience.
The Prime Minister’s remarks underscore the importance of continued reforms in one of the world’s largest rail networks, which plays a crucial role in the nation’s economic and social fabric.
