A Success Story from Bhadohi
One of the most inspiring examples is that of Pappu Devi, a resident of Bhadohi district, who transitioned from traditional farming to mushroom cultivation. Her entrepreneurial journey has enabled her to earn between ₹8 lakh and ₹10 lakh annually.
In a region traditionally dependent on crops like wheat and paddy, her shift towards high-value farming reflects a growing trend of diversification in agriculture.
Government Support Driving Change
Pappu Devi’s success has been supported by the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission (UPSRLM), which focuses on empowering rural women through self-employment opportunities. The scheme provides training, financial assistance, and technical guidance to encourage women to adopt non-traditional income sources.
With an initial investment of ₹2.5 lakh from her savings and an additional loan of ₹50,000, she began mushroom cultivation on a small scale. Technical support from Development Alternatives further helped her scale up the venture into a sustainable business.
Empowering Women, Strengthening Villages
Beyond personal success, Pappu Devi’s initiative has created employment opportunities for other women in her village. Many are now involved in cultivation, packaging, and marketing, contributing to the local rural economy.
Her model has also inspired several self-help groups (SHGs) and women entrepreneurs in nearby areas to explore mushroom farming as a viable livelihood option.

Why Mushroom Farming Is Gaining Popularity
Officials highlight that mushroom cultivation requires relatively low investment but offers high returns, making it ideal for small farmers and rural women. It also requires less land and can be practiced in controlled environments, reducing dependency on weather conditions.
The Uttar Pradesh government, under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is actively promoting such initiatives to diversify agriculture, boost rural incomes, and empower women economically.
A Growing Rural Transformation
As more women adopt innovative farming practices, schemes like UPSRLM are playing a crucial role in fostering self-reliance and entrepreneurship at the grassroots level.
Pappu Devi’s journey stands as a powerful example of how the right mix of training, financial support, and determination can transform lives and reshape rural economies. With continued government backing, mushroom farming is expected to emerge as a key driver of inclusive growth in Uttar Pradesh.
