Organ Racket Busted:
In a major breakthrough against illegal human Organ Racket Busted, the Assam Police busted a kidney transplant racket in Nagaon district, arresting three key members involved in smuggling and brokering kidneys for cash.
The operation was launched following sustained surveillance on the gang, which had allegedly been active for several years in the region, preying on vulnerable and impoverished families.

Organ Racket Busted: Three Held, Two More Under Watch
According to Nagaon Senior Superintendent of Police Swapnali Das, the accused — Dharani Das alias Bogumula, Mahendra Das, and Deep Das alias Dopy — were apprehended after police uncovered their role in running a local kidney smuggling network.
Two more individuals, identified as Hazrika from Baihata Chariali in Kamrup and Daluapgu from Guwahati, are suspected to be part of the same racket. “We are tracking their movements and verifying their involvement in the wider organ trade network,” said the SSP.
Poverty Exploited for Profit
The illegal trade reportedly thrived in a remote village near Nagaon, where financially struggling families were allegedly persuaded to sell their kidneys. Many residents claimed that brokers exploited alcoholism and poverty to lure villagers into the racket.
“We have families where three out of five members have already sold their kidneys,” said a local resident. “This has been going on for years, and most people were left with serious health issues after the surgery.”

Victims Cheated by Middlemen
As per the investigation, the donors were sent to Kolkata hospitals via brokers, who offered around ₹3–3.5 lakh per kidney. However, victims said they received only a fraction of the promised amount after deductions by middlemen.
Police suspect that the same group had been booked in 2021 for similar crimes but managed to restart operations under new aliases.
Investigation Expands Beyond Assam
Authorities are now probing the interstate and hospital links of the racket. “We believe this is part of a larger network operating across state borders. Our team is coordinating with Kolkata Police and health authorities to trace end recipients and financial trails,” a senior police officer said.
The arrests mark a crucial step in Assam’s ongoing crackdown against human trafficking and organ smuggling. Officials stated that further arrests are likely as the investigation deepens.
