A Tough Start but a Strong Finish by Mirabai Chanu

Chanu began her campaign in the snatch category with an 84kg lift but struggled in her subsequent attempts at 87kg, failing both. Despite an uncomfortable start, she made a stunning comeback in the clean and jerk, showcasing her trademark resilience.

The 31-year-old successfully lifted 109kg, 112kg, and finally 115kg—the same weight she famously lifted during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Her total of 199kg (84kg + 115kg) secured her the silver medal.

Record-Breaking Gold for North Korea

North Korea’s Ri Song Gum dominated the event, claiming gold with a world record total lift of 213kg (91kg snatch + 122kg clean and jerk). Her performance not only earned her the title but also set new global benchmarks in both total weight and clean & jerk.

Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukcharoen won the bronze medal with a total lift of 198kg (88kg + 110kg), just one kilogram shy of Chanu’s effort.

A Career of Consistency

Chanu’s performance in Norway adds to her impressive legacy. She previously won gold at the 2017 World Championships in Anaheim and a silver in 2022 in Bogota. Most recently, she claimed gold at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2025 in the 48kg category, held in August.

Speaking after her win, Chanu expressed gratitude to her coaches and fans, saying:
“Every competition teaches me something new. This silver medal motivates me to push harder for gold at the upcoming Commonwealth Games.”
