India’s Batting Brilliance Sets the Stage
Winning the toss, India opted to bat first and posted a commanding 298/7 in 50 overs, the second-highest total ever recorded in a Women’s World Cup final.
The foundation was laid by openers Smriti Mandhana (45) and Shafali Verma (87), who stitched together a fluent 100-run partnership.
India’s middle order continued the momentum with Deepti Sharma (54) anchoring the innings and Richa Ghosh (34) adding quick runs in the death overs.
Among South African bowlers, Ayabonga Khaka stood out with figures of 3 for 58, while Nadine de Klerk, Nonkululeko Mlaba, and Chloe Tryon picked up a wicket each.
South Africa Falter Despite Wolvaardt’s Century
In reply, South Africa made a promising start, reaching fifty without loss courtesy of Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits. Wolvaardt showcased her class yet again, notching her 39th ODI fifty before converting it into a gritty 101 off 104 balls.
However, the turning point came when Amanjot Kaur’s direct hit ran out Brits, followed by Sree Charani trapping Anneke Bosch LBW.
India’s young star Shafali Verma then struck twice in quick succession, removing Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp, shifting the game decisively in India’s favor.
Deepti Sharma cleaned up the tail with an exceptional 5 for 39, ensuring South Africa were bowled out for 246 in 45.3 overs.
