IndiGo Crisis Deepens:

The country’s largest airline has cancelled thousands of flights this month, stranding passengers nationwide and drawing intense regulatory scrutiny.

IndiGo Crisis Deepens: DGCA Fires Inspectors, CEO Summoned Again

DGCA Acts Amid Massive Flight Disruptions

According to official sources, the DGCA removed the inspectors after discovering negligence in their oversight duties. Their role included monitoring IndiGo’s safety standards, crew planning, and operational compliance—areas now at the centre of the airline’s ongoing crisis.

IndiGo has been grappling with widespread cancellations caused by poor planning, staff shortages, and difficulty meeting strengthened safety norms. With nearly 2,200 daily flights, the mandated 10% cut in operations means over 200 flights will now be cancelled each day, further worsening the disruption.

IndiGo CEO Summoned for Fresh Explanation

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers has been summoned again by the regulator and is scheduled to appear before DGCA officials on Friday. The repeated summons indicate the seriousness of IndiGo’s operational lapses and the mounting pressure on the airline to correct course.

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu publicly criticised the airline, stating that passengers had faced “severe inconvenience” due to IndiGo’s mismanagement of crew rosters, flight timings and communication. He emphasised that IndiGo must strictly comply with ministry directives, which include fare caps and enhanced passenger support.

Special Oversight Teams Deployed at Gurugram Office

In an unprecedented move, the DGCA has placed two special oversight teams inside IndiGo’s headquarters in Gurugram.

Team 1: Monitoring Operations & Crew Management

This team is reviewing:

1.Fleet strength

2.Pilot availability

3.Crew duty hours & split-duty patterns

4.Training schedules

5.Standby crew levels

6.Frequency of unplanned leave

7.Number of flights cancelled due to crew shortages

8.Network patterns and average stage length

Their findings will help the DGCA assess the full scale of IndiGo’s operational collapse.

Team 2: Tracking Passenger Impact & Compensation

The second team is focused on customer-related issues, including:

1.Status of refunds (airline + travel agents)

2.Compensation as per Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR)

3.Baggage return delays

4.Overall on-time performance

5.Cancellation trends

Both teams must submit daily reports to the DGCA by 6 p.m.

A Crisis With No Quick Fix in Sight
