Asmita Dey Creates History for India
Asmita secured the gold medal after defeating Canada’s Heidi Quach by 2-1 through a dramatic Golden Score, making history as the first Indian judoka to win gold at the Commonwealth Games.
Her remarkable campaign began with an impressive ippon victory over Scotland’s Eva Ewing in the quarter-finals. She then edged past home favourite Summer Shaw in a closely contested semi-final before displaying exceptional composure in the final to claim the historic title.
The victory marks a major milestone for Indian judo and places Tripura firmly on the international sporting map.

An Inspirational Journey from Belonia
Born on March 22, 2003, in Belonia, Tripura, Asmita Dey comes from a humble family. Her father, Arjun Kumar Dey, runs a bicycle repair shop. Initially interested in the 800-metre race, Asmita was introduced to judo after a coach recognised her potential.
She first trained under Bina Debnath at the Belonia Vidyapeeth Coaching Centre before continuing her development with Manik Lal Deb at the Tripura Sports School.
In 2018, she joined the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Regional Centre, Bhopal, where she trained under coach Yashpal Solanki. Her consistent performances later earned her a place in the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) Development Group.
A Career Built on International Success
Asmita has steadily established herself as one of India’s brightest judo talents. She became the first judoka from Tripura to win an international medal at the Asian Cadet and Junior Judo Competition in 2022.
Her achievements also include:
• Gold medal at the 2023 Junior Asia Cup
• Silver medal at the Asian Open in Kuwait
• Gold medal at the 2025 African Open in Casablanca, Morocco
