The wait is finally over. The makers of S.S. Rajamouli’s much-anticipated global epic, previously called GlobeTrotter, on Saturday officially announced the film’s title as ‘Varanasi’. The team also confirmed that Mahesh Babu will play the powerful lead character, Rudhra, in what is already being labelled one of the biggest cinematic events of the decade.
The announcement was made at a massive fan event at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad, attended by several thousand ecstatic fans, making it one of the largest live gatherings in Indian entertainment history.

A Spectacular Teaser That Stuns Fans Worldwide
To mark the title reveal, the makers released a breathtaking title teaser—a visually stunning clip that hints at a story spanning multiple eras and regions, infused with a strong devotional undercurrent.
Rajamouli explained that the scale of the project demanded a visual announcement rather than a verbal one.
“For this film, mere words wouldn’t do justice to its scale and scope,” the director said. “We decided to create an announcement video that could convey the magnitude of the project without a single line of dialogue.”
Despite a few anxious moments due to technical delays, the spellbinding teaser was finally unveiled, receiving thunderous applause from fans present at the event and online viewers alike.
Introducing a New Technology to Indian Cinema
Rajamouli paid tribute to veteran actor Krishna, Mahesh Babu’s father, recalling his pioneering contributions to Indian cinema.
> “To introduce a new technology, you must create new pathways. Krishna garu did that many times,” Rajamouli noted.
He proudly revealed that Varanasi is introducing Premium Large Scale Format Filmed For IMAX, a groundbreaking innovation being used for the first time in Indian cinema.

A Grand Event at Ramoji Film City
The title reveal took place on what is being described as one of the largest stages ever created for a film event—standing 100 feet tall with a 130-foot-wide screen. Fans arrived in droves, turning the occasion into a once-in-a-generation spectacle.
The evening also featured a captivating dance performance by Shruti Haasan, adding to the grandeur of the celebration.

The makers have already unveiled character looks of the film’s other major stars:
Prithviraj Sukumaran plays the antagonist Kumbha, a fierce and menacing presence.
