The victims had reportedly just alighted from the Prayagraj–Barwadih passenger train and were attempting to cross the tracks to reach another platform when the Kalka Mail thundered through the station at around 9:15 a.m.

“The impact was severe, leaving the bodies badly mutilated,” said Raghavendra Singh, Inspector of the Government Railway Police (GRP), Mirzapur. The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination soon after the accident.

Eyewitnesses said the pilgrims were returning from a holy dip in the Ganga and were on their way to Varanasi. Panic and chaos ensued at the station as bystanders rushed to help, while RPF and GRP personnel quickly launched rescue and relief operations.

In a related development, officials reported that the death toll in Tuesday’s train collision near Bilaspur railway station in Chhattisgarh has risen to 11. The accident involved a goods train and a MEMU local, leaving several passengers injured and hospitalized.

The two back-to-back incidents have raised concerns over railway safety protocols and the need for stricter platform-crossing enforcement to prevent such accidents.
