Agartala: In a significant step towards sustainable agriculture, Tripura has officially converted more than 25,000 hectares of land into certified organic farmland, positioning the northeastern state as a national leader in India’s organic farming revolution.

According to officials from the Tripura Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, this transformation is part of a broader initiative under the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER), backed by the Government of India.
🌱 State’s Commitment to Organic Growth
This massive conversion to organic farming not only benefits the environment but also ensures healthier food production, improved soil fertility, and better market value for farmers.
The government has supported farmers through:
- Subsidized organic inputs like vermicompost, bio-pesticides, and natural fertilizers
- Training and capacity building on organic farming techniques
- Setting up organic clusters and certification agencies for quality control
The districts of Dhalai, Gomati, and North Tripura have witnessed the most extensive organic transformation so far.
🧑🌾 Farmers Reaping the Benefits
Organic farmer groups are already seeing better prices for their produce in both domestic and export markets. Crops like pineapple, ginger, turmeric, and black pepper are showing strong yields without chemical inputs.
Farmers are also benefiting from market linkages, e-commerce partnerships, and dedicated organic mandis for direct selling.
🗣️ Official Statement
A senior Agriculture Department official stated:
“Tripura is committed to becoming a fully organic state in the coming years. This 25,000-hectare milestone is just the beginning. The focus is now on building an ecosystem that sustains organic practices with long-term viability.”
♻️ Future Plans
Tripura plans to:
- Add another 15,000 hectares of certified land by 2026
- Introduce organic certification training in rural schools
- Launch an Organic Tripura branding campaign for national visibility
The organic mission is also closely linked with environmental conservation, promoting biodiversity, and reducing harmful residues in food chains.
