Economic Leap Under the Indo-Pacific Vision

Speaking at a regional dialogue on the growth potential of Northeast India in Agartala, Kiran Gitte, Secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce, Government of Tripura, said the state is turning a new page in development.“Tripura is embarking on a journey of transformation by converting investment interests and MoUs into real projects, expanding the service sector, and empowering women entrepreneurs,” he stated.

“Tripura is embarking on a journey of transformation by converting investment interests and MoUs into real projects, expanding the service sector, and empowering women entrepreneurs,” he stated.

The event, organized by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) under the U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategic Framework: Northeastern Dialogue, aimed to promote regional trade, connectivity, and U.S.–India collaboration. The initiative, supported by the U.S. government, has previously covered Meghalaya, Assam, Sikkim, Manipur, and Mizoram.

₹15,000-Crore Investment Pipeline

Highlighting Tripura’s growing investor confidence, Gitte recalled the North East Rising Investment Summit held in New Delhi, where Tripura received proposals worth ₹15,000 crore—nearly half the state’s annual budget.
“Our goal now is to operationalize these proposals by turning MoUs into ground-level projects that generate jobs, industrial capacity, and sustainable private investment,” he said.

Empowering Women: The Rise of Tripura’s Crorepati Didis:

At the heart of this new growth story lies Tripura’s focus on inclusive and gender-responsive development. The Tripura Women Entrepreneurship Policy seeks to transform women from self-help group (SHG) members into full-fledged entrepreneurs.

According to Gitte, 4.8 lakh women in Tripura are active in SHGs. The government aims to support at least one lakh women to scale their ventures into established businesses, creating Tripura’s Crorepati Didis who can drive the local economy.

This initiative is expected to strengthen household incomes, generate rural employment, and foster women-led microenterprises across the state.

Service Sector: The Next Growth Engine

Tripura’s development blueprint also emphasizes the service sector—especially education, healthcare, tourism, and start-ups.
The government’s stable policies, improved road and rail connectivity, robust digital infrastructure, and banking systems have laid a strong foundation for private investment.

Tripura: Gateway to Southeast Asia

Nilanjan Ghosh, Vice President (Development Studies) at ORF, highlighted Tripura’s strategic advantage as India’s bridge to Bangladesh and a gateway to Southeast Asia.
“By enhancing cooperation, cross-border trade, and youth entrepreneurship, Tripura can emerge as a vibrant growth hub for the entire Northeast,” he said.

Dr. Anasua Basu Ray Chaudhury, Senior Fellow at ORF, added that Tripura’s location gives it a pivotal role in the Bay of Bengal security and trade framework, strengthening India’s Indo-Pacific connectivity vision.
