In a significant boost to alternative healthcare education in the Northeast, Tripura will soon get a Homeopathic Medical College in Agartala and an Ayurvedic Medical College in Gomati district, with the Union Ministry of AYUSH allocating ₹140 crore for the establishment of the two institutions. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Manik Saha on Wednesday.

The development is expected to strengthen medical education infrastructure in the state while also reviving public faith in traditional systems of medicine.

High-Level Meeting Chaired by CM Manik Saha

A high-level review meeting was held at the Secretariat Conference Hall under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Manik Saha to discuss the planning, execution, and timeline of the two proposed medical colleges.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of learning from established institutions outside the state before initiating construction.

> “Before starting the work, experience should be gathered by visiting Homeopathic and Ayurvedic medical colleges outside the state and that experience should be utilised here,” CM Saha said.

He also stressed the need to fix a clear time frame to ensure timely completion of the projects.

Vision to Restore Faith in Traditional Medicine

CM Manik Saha, who also holds the Health Ministry portfolio, took detailed stock of the placement status of students from Tripura currently studying in Homeopathic and Ayurvedic colleges outside the state.

He said that earlier, people of Tripura had immense faith in traditional medical systems.

> “Earlier, the people of the state had faith in Homeopathy and Ayurvedic treatment, and that faith needs to be restored,” the Chief Minister stated.

60 Seats Each, Full Academic Infrastructure Planned

As per the detailed presentation made during the meeting:

Each medical college will have an intake capacity of 60 seats

Locations of the colleges in Agartala and Gomati district were presented

Academic schedules, teaching departments, and infrastructure layout were showcased through a slideshow

Timelines for construction and academic operations were also discussed

The initiative is expected to reduce the migration of students to other states for AYUSH education and create local employment opportunities.

Major Step for AYUSH Growth in Tripura

The move aligns with the Centre’s broader push to strengthen AYUSH-based healthcare education and treatment across India. Once operational, the two medical colleges are expected to significantly improve access to affordable alternative healthcare services in Tripura and neighboring northeastern states.

Experts believe the initiative will also promote medical tourism, research, and local skill development in traditional medicine systems.
