Tripura Police Destroy 5,000 Ganja Plants:
In a major anti-narcotics operation, North Tripura police on Sunday destroyed a large illegal ganja (cannabis) plantation spread across interior parts of the district, dealing a significant blow to local drug cultivation networks.

The special drive, carried out under the supervision of the District Intelligence Branch (DIB), SDPO Dharmanagar, and Officer-in-Charge of Churaibari Police Station, targeted illicit cannabis cultivation in remote hilly terrain at Katuacherra under Balicharra ADC Village, around 3 km from the National Highway.

According to police reports, security forces destroyed approximately 5,000 cannabis plants during the operation. Personnel from the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) assisted in the drive, ensuring the complete uprooting and destruction of the illegal plantation on-site.
“This operation was based on confidential information. Around 5,000 cannabis plants have been destroyed. Similar anti-narcotics drives will continue in the future,” said Officer-in-Charge Debabrata Biswas of Churaibari Police Station.

First Major Operation in the Border Belt
Police sources confirmed that this was the first large-scale destruction of a cannabis plantation by the DIB and Churaibari Police in the Tripura-Assam border area. The remote tilla land had reportedly been used by local groups for secret cultivation and trade of cannabis for an extended period, but no major crackdowns had been conducted until now.
Authorities suspect the involvement of an organized local network behind the cultivation. Investigations are underway to determine whether the land falls under a forest reserve area or private ownership. Police believe that identifying the cultivators and financiers could soon expose the broader supply chain.
Continuing Crackdown on Illegal Activities
OC Biswas emphasized that the North Tripura police remain committed to curbing illegal drug cultivation and trade. “Such joint operations will continue in the coming days to stop all forms of illegal activity in the region,” he added.
Tripura, which shares a porous border with Assam and Bangladesh, has been under increased surveillance due to recurring cases of drug trafficking and narcotic plant cultivation. The latest operation marks a strong step toward a drug-free Tripura, aligning with the state’s broader anti-narcotics mission.
