In an unprecedented security clampdown, Pakistan’s capital Islamabad and neighbouring Rawalpindi have been turned into virtual fortresses on Friday ahead of the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) protest. Authorities sealed major roads, cut communication lines, and imposed Section 144, banning all public gatherings and rallies.
According to local reports, the TLP has called for a massive anti-Israel protest outside the US Embassy in Islamabad following Friday prayers, prompting an intense security response from the government.

Massive Security Deployment in Twin Cities Over TLP Protest
Over 6,000 police officers and security personnel have been deployed in Rawalpindi, led by City Police Officer Syed Khalid Hamdani. Police have established blockades using containers and barriers at over 37 key points across the twin cities, including Faizabad Interchange, Murree Road, and GT Road, to prevent TLP supporters from entering the capital.
Snipers and 13 Special Police Units have been stationed along major intersections, including Kalma Chowk, Rahimabad, Gulzar-e-Quaid, Sawan Pul, and Adiala Road, while the Metro Bus Service between the two cities has been suspended indefinitely.
Public Life Disrupted
All public and private schools along Multan Road have been ordered to remain closed, and universities in Islamabad and Rawalpindi have suspended classes for the day. The shutdown has caused severe traffic congestion, with vehicles diverting into narrow lanes, leaving commuters stranded for hours.
Routine court operations were disrupted, with police unable to present prisoners from Adiala Jail due to the road closures. The Senate session scheduled for Friday was also adjourned indefinitely after failing to meet quorum requirements.

Tensions Rise After Police Raid on TLP Headquarters
The unrest follows a police raid on TLP’s headquarters on Thursday night to arrest the party’s chief, Saad Rizvi. The attempt sparked violent clashes between police and TLP supporters, who reportedly hurled stones and sticks, while police retaliated with tear gas.
Interior Minister of State Talal Chaudhry confirmed that TLP had not obtained official permission for the rally and warned that “anyone violating Section 144 will face strict action.”
Communication Blackout and Red Zone Restrictions
Authorities have also cut communication lines in several areas to prevent the spread of misinformation and mobilization through social media. Barricades have been placed around the Red Zone and Extended Red Zone, home to sensitive government buildings and diplomatic missions.
Key access points, including Taxila Chowk, Brahma Interchange, Fateh Jang Toll Plaza, Gujar Khan, Mandra Toll Plaza, and Chakwal Morh, remain closed, effectively isolating Islamabad from surrounding regions.
The situation remains tense as law enforcement braces for possible clashes following Friday prayers.
