OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT for Teens:

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for Teens, a dedicated experience designed for users aged 13 to 17, combining learning-focused tools with stronger safety protections. The new experience aims to help teenagers use artificial intelligence responsibly while supporting critical thinking, education and age-appropriate activities.

OpenAI has increasingly focused on building safeguards specifically for younger users, including age prediction, parental controls and additional protections against sensitive content.

Teen Users Get Enhanced Safety Protections

Teen users are automatically placed into the teen experience when OpenAI identifies an account as belonging to someone under 18. OpenAI says the experience includes additional safeguards around areas such as self-harm, graphic violence, dangerous activities, unhealthy body-image content and sexual or violent roleplay.

The company has also introduced measures designed to encourage healthier patterns of AI use, including more frequent reminders to take breaks during extended sessions.

Study Mode Encourages Learning Instead of Shortcuts

One of the key features is Study Mode, which is designed to help students understand concepts rather than simply receive answers.

The feature uses guiding questions, structured explanations and step-by-step assistance to encourage students to work through problems themselves. OpenAI says Study Mode was developed with input from teachers, learning scientists and pedagogy experts.

Parents with linked teen accounts can also enable Study Mode through Parental Controls, making it the default for new chats when activated.

Homework Reminders, Quizzes and Learning Tools

The teen experience also includes learning-focused features intended to make studying more interactive.

Responsible Homework Reminders are designed to discourage students from seeking shortcuts and instead encourage collaborative problem-solving. Quizzes and learning visualisations provide additional ways for students to practise concepts and reinforce their understanding.

OpenAI has also been expanding interactive learning experiences across subjects, alongside tools that help students create study guides, flashcards and practice questions.

Parents Get More Control

Parents who link their accounts with their teenager’s ChatGPT account can use Parental Controls to manage selected settings and establish Quiet Hours.

In certain high-risk situations, parents may also receive safety notifications. OpenAI says these controls are intended to give families greater oversight while respecting teenagers’ privacy. Parents do not receive access to their teen’s conversations simply because accounts are linked.

OpenAI Releases Parents’ Learning Guide

Alongside the teen experience, OpenAI has also expanded resources for families, including guidance designed to help parents understand teen-specific ChatGPT features, configure parental controls and encourage healthy AI habits at home.

The company says its broader approach is aimed at ensuring teenagers can benefit from AI for learning and creativity while receiving protections appropriate to their age and stage of development.

As AI becomes increasingly integrated into education and everyday life, OpenAI’s teen-focused experience represents a broader industry effort to balance access to powerful AI tools with stronger safeguards for younger users.
