Concerns are growing across Tripura over the alleged sale of chemically ripened mangoes in local markets, with consumers and health-conscious citizens calling for stricter monitoring and enforcement by food safety authorities. Large quantities of mangoes transported from outside the state are reportedly being sold after undergoing artificial ripening and chemical treatment, raising questions about food safety and public health.

The issue has drawn attention as mangoes continue to dominate fruit markets during the peak summer season. Allegations suggest that chemically treated mangoes are being sold not only through established fruit shops but also by roadside vendors and handcart sellers in various parts of Agartala and other urban areas.

Growing Concerns Over Artificial Ripening
Food safety experts have long warned against the use of hazardous substances such as calcium carbide and unauthorized chemical preservatives to accelerate the ripening process of fruits. These chemicals are often used to make mangoes appear uniformly ripe and visually attractive, enabling traders to bring fruits to market more quickly.
According to health experts, the use of banned or unsafe chemicals in fruit ripening may expose consumers to health risks. Reported concerns include mouth ulcers, throat irritation, digestive discomfort, gastric disorders and other health complications associated with prolonged exposure to harmful substances.
Consumers have expressed concern that despite the widespread availability of mangoes in markets, there appears to be limited visible enforcement or public awareness campaigns regarding artificial ripening practices.
Calls for Stronger Food Safety Enforcement
Consumer groups and residents are increasingly urging the state’s Food Safety Department and Public Health authorities to conduct regular inspections of fruit markets and wholesale supply chains. They have also called for random laboratory testing of mango samples to determine whether banned chemicals are being used.
Many consumers believe that stricter surveillance and enforcement measures would help protect public health and ensure compliance with food safety regulations.

Impact on Consumer Confidence
The issue has gained additional relevance following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks on mangoes and India’s rich fruit heritage during his Mann Ki Baat programme. His comments highlighted the cultural, agricultural and economic importance of mangoes, often referred to as the “King of Fruits” in India.
However, food safety advocates argue that allegations of chemical treatment continue to undermine consumer confidence and may negatively affect the reputation of Indian agricultural products in domestic and international markets.
Demand for Immediate Action
Mango lovers in Agartala and other parts of Tripura have demanded strict action against traders found using banned chemicals for ripening fruits. They argue that ensuring safe and naturally ripened produce is essential for consumer health and for maintaining trust in the fruit supply chain.
As the mango season reaches its peak, consumers are hoping authorities will intensify inspections and testing efforts to ensure that fruits reaching the market meet established food safety standards.
