India’s Largest AI Data Centre: A Global Tech Milestone
Officials from the Andhra Pradesh government had initially estimated Google’s investment at around $10 billion, but the tech giant has now confirmed a $15 billion commitment, reflecting the scale and ambition of the project.
Once operational, the Visakhapatnam facility will become Google’s largest data centre in Asia, both in terms of capacity and investment size. The hub will enable large-scale deployment of AI models, cloud services, and digital solutions for enterprises across India and beyond.
State IT Minister Nara Lokesh welcomed the announcement, stating,
> “In an era where data is the new oil, such initiatives will serve as a strategic advantage for both the state and the nation.”
AI Boom Driving Global Data Centre Race
The decision comes amid intensifying competition among major tech firms such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta, all of which are investing heavily in data centre infrastructure to power the next generation of AI tools.
Google alone has pledged around $85 billion in 2025 for expanding its data centre and cloud capacity worldwide. AI applications require massive computing power, driving the need for specialized data centres capable of linking thousands of high-performance chips in vast clusters.
India, with nearly one billion internet users and a rapidly expanding digital economy, has emerged as a key market for AI innovation and data infrastructure investment.
