The announcement was confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) during a weekly media briefing, where spokesperson highlighted that the move would enhance people-to-people connections between the two nations.

Visa-Free Transit Effective from April 10

Under the new policy, Indian passport holders transiting through mainland France exclusively by air will no longer require a transit visa. The decision has been implemented with effect from April 10, 2026.

According to the MEA, this step follows an agreement reached earlier this year between Prime Minister and French President during their meeting in Mumbai in February.

“This move reflects the enduring partnership between India and France and will facilitate smoother movement of people,” Jaiswal said.

Strengthening India-France Strategic Partnership

The visa-free transit policy is seen as part of the broader strengthening of India-France relations, which were recently elevated to a ‘Special Global Strategic Partnership’ during President Macron’s visit to India.

The high-level talks between the two leaders marked a turning point in bilateral relations, with both countries unveiling an ambitious roadmap across multiple sectors including defence, technology, and healthcare.

Expanding Cooperation Across Key Sectors

In addition to easing travel norms, India and France continue to deepen cooperation in critical areas such as civil nuclear energy, space, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence (AI).

Recent diplomatic engagements, including Foreign Office Consultations held in Paris, have further reinforced commitments to collaboration in digital innovation and global security challenges.

Boost to Travel and Cultural Exchange

Experts believe the removal of transit visa requirements will significantly benefit Indian travellers, especially those using French airports as transit hubs for Europe and beyond. It is also expected to boost tourism, business travel, and cultural exchange between the two countries.

The development comes as part of a broader push by both nations to strengthen connectivity and foster closer ties in the coming decades under the Horizon 2047 vision.

Overall, the move is being seen as a positive step toward simplifying international travel for Indian citizens while reinforcing the growing partnership between India and France.
