Strait of Hormuz Tensions:

India on Thursday confirmed that several Indian vessels have safely exited the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz in recent weeks, even as tensions continue to rise in the region. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that while 14 Indian ships have exited the Strait, another 14 vessels remain in the Persian Gulf.

Addressing a weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson said, “We have Indian ships which have exited the Strait of Hormuz safely in the last few weeks. We also have Indian ships which are still in the Persian Gulf.”

Rising Tensions in a Key Global Oil Route

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, with nearly one-fifth of global oil trade passing through it. The region has witnessed escalating tensions following the ongoing conflict in West Asia, raising concerns over the safety of commercial shipping.

Iranian Attacks on Vessels Raise Concerns

In a recent development, Iran reportedly attacked a vessel transiting through the Strait that was en route to India’s Mundra Port in Gujarat. The attack occurred shortly after US President announced an indefinite ceasefire in the region.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGC-N) claimed responsibility for targeting two ships, identified as MSC Francesca and Epaminondas. According to shipping data, the Liberian-flagged Epaminondas was headed to Mundra from Dubai’s Jebel Ali port and was expected to arrive shortly.

India Lodges Strong Protest

India has expressed serious concern over these incidents. The government lodged a strong protest with Iran, summoning its Ambassador to New Delhi, , for discussions.

Foreign Secretary conveyed India’s concerns regarding the safety of Indian-flagged vessels and mariners operating in the region. He emphasized the importance of secure maritime routes and urged Iranian authorities to ensure safe passage for India-bound ships.

Focus on Safety of Indian Mariners

India has reiterated that the safety of its merchant vessels and crew remains a top priority. Officials also recalled that Iran had previously facilitated safe transit for ships bound for India and urged a return to such cooperation.

With geopolitical tensions persisting, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz continues to be closely monitored, as any disruption could have significant implications for global trade and energy supplies.
