At least eight people were killed and over a dozen injured after a powerful Delhi Blast ripped through parked cars near Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening. The blast sent shockwaves across the national capital, prompting security agencies in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra to declare a high alert.
The injured have been rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital, while authorities have cordoned off the entire area surrounding the historic Red Fort, one of the most crowded parts of Old Delhi.

Massive Blast Triggers Panic Across the Capital
According to officials from the Delhi Fire Department, loud blast-like sounds were reported around 6:30 p.m. “We received information about an explosion and a subsequent fire involving multiple vehicles near the Red Fort Metro Station. Seven fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the scene,” a Fire Department spokesperson confirmed.
The Delhi Blast reportedly triggered fires in at least three nearby vehicles, intensifying the chaos in the densely populated area. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising above the Red Fort, leading to panic among local residents and commuters.
Police and Special Cell Launch Investigation
Senior officers of the Delhi Police, including teams from the Special Cell, quickly reached the site and cordoned off the area. Forensic experts and bomb disposal squads are currently investigating the cause of the explosion.
Initial reports suggest a parked car may have detonated, setting off a chain reaction of fires. However, authorities have not ruled out the possibility of a terror link, as several social media reports hinted toward a suspicious device found near the scene.
> “We are examining every possible angle, including technical and forensic evidence,” said a senior Delhi Police official, adding that no official confirmation about the cause has been made yet.

Nationwide High Alert Issued
Following the incident, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs directed states and security agencies to maintain heightened vigilance, especially in major metro cities. Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra have been placed on high alert, with increased deployment at public places, railway stations, and airports.
Traffic around Old Delhi, including Chandni Chowk and Daryaganj, has been diverted as a precautionary measure. Authorities have urged residents to avoid spreading unverified information on social media until official updates are released.
Investigation Underway
As rescue operations continue, officials say a detailed probe is underway to determine the source and motive behind the explosion. The National Security Guard (NSG) and Intelligence Bureau (IB) have also been briefed on the incident.
The tragedy has once again raised concerns about urban security preparedness and the vulnerability of high-footfall zones around national landmarks.
