The symbolic exchange highlighted the deep-rooted cultural and historical ties between India and Sweden while also marking the centenary celebrations of Tagore’s historic visit to Sweden in 1926.

Sweden Gifts Rare Tagore Epigrams to PM Modi

During the meeting in Gothenburg, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson presented Prime Minister Modi with facsimiles of two handwritten epigrams by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, preserved in the Swedish National Archives.

The rare literary pieces were originally created by Tagore during his visits to Sweden in 1921 and 1926. The gift also included a brief explanatory note and a historic photograph taken during Tagore’s visit to Uppsala University in 1921.

Expressing gratitude for the gesture, PM Modi described the gift as a reflection of the strong cultural connection shared by the two nations.

“Deeply touched to receive facsimiles of two handwritten epigrams by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. I thank the Government and people of Sweden for this thoughtful gesture, which reflects the enduring cultural bonds between our nations,” PM Modi wrote on X.

He further praised Tagore’s timeless vision and contribution to humanity.

“Gurudev Tagore’s words continue to illuminate minds across generations and geographies. His vision of human dignity, knowledge and brotherhood remains timeless,” the Prime Minister added.

Swedish PM Highlights India-Sweden Friendship

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also shared details of the exchange on social media, calling the gesture a tribute to the long-standing relationship between India and Sweden.

“Had the honour to hand over a facsimile of two handwritten epigrams by the influential Indian author Rabindranath Tagore to Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Kristersson posted on X.

He noted that Tagore, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, remains a significant cultural bridge between the two countries.

PM Modi Gifts Tagore Works and Shantiniketan Bag

In return, Prime Minister Modi gifted Kristersson a collection of Rabindranath Tagore’s literary works along with a handcrafted Shantiniketan bag inspired by motifs personally associated with Gurudev.

According to an official statement, the handcrafted bag was designed to support local artisans while symbolising Tagore’s philosophy of integrating art into everyday life.

“The bag symbolises Tagore’s philosophy that art is not meant to be confined to galleries, but to breathe life into everyday objects,” the statement said.

Strengthening India-Sweden Relations

The exchange took place during PM Modi’s two-day official visit to Sweden aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas including trade, technology, innovation and culture.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi was also conferred with the ‘Royal Order of the Polar Star, Degree Commander Grand Cross’ in recognition of his contribution to strengthening India-Sweden relations.

Rabindranath Tagore, the first non-European Nobel laureate in Literature, had visited Sweden in 1921, where he was formally received by King Gustav V after being unable to attend the Nobel ceremony in 1913.
