India’s First Digital Census 2027:
India is set to conduct its first fully digital population Census in 2027, marking a major shift toward technology-driven governance. The initiative will leverage mobile-based data collection to generate reliable and comprehensive data aimed at strengthening evidence-based policymaking and inclusive development.
According to an official fact-sheet, Census 2027 will introduce several pioneering features, including near real-time monitoring through the Census Management & Monitoring System (CMIMS) portal, an optional self-enumeration facility, and extensive use of geo-referenced jurisdictions for improved accuracy.

Digital Transformation of Census
The upcoming Census will be conducted using mobile applications, replacing traditional paper-based methods. This transition is expected to enhance efficiency, reduce errors, and ensure faster processing of data.
Authorities have also strengthened data security measures, with Critical Information Infrastructure (CII)-designated data centres in place to safeguard sensitive information. With a large workforce supporting the exercise, officials say the digital Census will deliver highly reliable datasets.
Inclusion of Caste Enumeration
In a significant policy decision, the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs has approved the inclusion of caste enumeration in Census 2027. Previously, only Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) were systematically counted.
The inclusion is expected to provide deeper insights into social structures and help design more targeted welfare policies.
Two-Phase Nationwide Exercise
Census 2027 will be conducted in two structured phases to ensure comprehensive data collection across the country. This systematic approach aims to capture demographic, social, cultural, and economic information with greater precision.
With an approved outlay of ₹11,718.24 crore, the exercise will be one of the largest administrative operations in the world.
