The latest relief assistance was confirmed by Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, who posted on X (formerly Twitter):

“Augmenting Afghanistan’s healthcare efforts. India has delivered 73 tonnes of life-saving medicines, vaccines and essential supplements to Kabul to cater to urgent medical needs. India’s unwavering support to the Afghan people continues.”

India Strengthens Diplomatic and Humanitarian Partnership

High-level talks held to expand cooperation

Last week, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar met Afghanistan’s Industry and Commerce Minister Alhaj Nooruddin Azizi in New Delhi. The leaders discussed opportunities to enhance trade, connectivity, and people-to-people ties, reaffirming India’s development role in Afghanistan.

After the meeting, EAM Jaishankar posted:
“Discussed ways to strengthen our trade, connectivity and people-to-people ties. Reiterated India’s support for the development and welfare of the people of Afghanistan.”

Series of Indian Assistance Deliveries in Recent Months

Aid extended to earthquake-hit Afghan families

This latest shipment follows multiple rounds of humanitarian aid, including food supplies delivered earlier in November to families affected by the 6.3-magnitude earthquake in Balkh, Samangan, and Baghlan provinces, which killed over 20 people and injured hundreds.

The MEA previously stated:
“Reaffirming its support to the Afghan people, India delivers food items for the families affected by the earthquake.”

On October 10, India also shipped additional food supplies and handed over five ambulances as part of emergency relief support.

During the same visit, Jaishankar met Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi, emphasizing cooperation on:

Development projects

Bilateral trade

Territorial integrity and independence

Capacity building

Humanitarian efforts

Calling the meeting an “important step” in advancing bilateral relations, experts say India continues to play a vital stabilizing role in the region through non-political humanitarian engagement.

Humanitarian Aid Over Politics

India has consistently maintained that its assistance to Afghanistan is for the welfare of the Afghan people and does not indicate political recognition of the current administration. Since 2021, India has delivered:

50,000 tonnes of wheat

Multiple consignments of medical aid

Earthquake relief supplies

COVID-19 vaccines

Ambulances and healthcare support

With Afghanistan facing severe shortages of medical supplies, India’s latest 73-tonne shipment is expected to significantly support hospitals and emergency services.
