Cabinet Approves Rs 2,781 Crore Railway Boost:
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved two major multitracking railway projects worth ₹2,781 crore to enhance rail connectivity and reduce congestion across Maharashtra and Gujarat. The approval was announced on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, according to an official government communiqué.

The projects cover a total stretch of 224 km, aiming to improve passenger movement, freight logistics efficiency, and regional connectivity.

Key Projects Approved
1. Doubling of Devbhumi Dwarka (Okha)–Kanalus Line
Length: 141 km
Location: Gujarat
Objective: Boost connectivity to the Dwarkadhish Temple, a major pilgrimage site.
Expected Impact: Development push across the Saurashtra region through tourism, trade, and travel growth.
2. Badlapur–Karjat 3rd & 4th Line Project
Length: 32 km
Location: Maharashtra
Significance: Part of the Mumbai suburban railway corridor, one of the world’s busiest commuter networks.
Purpose: Reduce congestion, improve reliability, and meet future passenger demand while also supporting freight movement to southern India.
Economic and Logistical Benefits
The Ministry stated that the upgraded infrastructure will significantly enhance freight capacity, enabling an estimated additional 18 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum). The route is critical for transporting essential commodities including coal, salt, cement, POL, and container cargo.
The projects are expected to:
Reduce oil import by 3 crore litres
Cut carbon emissions by 16 crore kg
Environmental impact equivalent to planting 64 lakh trees
Directly benefit 585 villages and 32 lakh people

Alignment with National Goals
The multi-tracking projects are aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on integrated transportation and logistics development. The initiative is expected to create new employment opportunities and support regional economies, reinforcing the vision of a self-reliant (Atmanirbhar) India, the statement said.
A government spokesperson added that the expanded track capacity will improve mobility, operational efficiency, and service reliability while decongesting high-density rail routes.
