In a major advancement towards building India’s self-reliant deep-tech ecosystem, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh on Monday announced the establishment of four state-of-the-art quantum fabrication and central facilities worth ₹720 crore under the National Quantum Mission (NQM). The announcement was made during his official visit to IIT Bombay.

The initiative marks a significant milestone in India’s pursuit of global leadership in next-generation quantum computing, sensing and materials, positioning the country among a select group of technologically advanced nations working on futuristic computing capabilities.

Rs 720 Crore Quantum Push to Transform Indigenous Research Infrastructure

According to the Minister, the new facilities will be hosted across four premier science institutions:

IIT Bombay

IISc Bengaluru

IIT Kanpur

IIT Delhi


These advanced fabrication and characterisation setups will support research in quantum sensing, metrology, superconducting and photonic qubits, spin-based qubits, and quantum materials, enabling the development of secure and scalable quantum devices within India.

He also emphasized that the facilities will be accessible not only to NQM investigators but also to universities, industry, start-ups, strategic sectors and government R&D labs, accelerating innovation and commercialization.

Institutions to Lead Specialized Quantum Domains

Dr. Singh highlighted the designated leadership roles of each institute:

IIT Bombay & IIT Kanpur — to spearhead quantum sensing and metrology

IISc Bengaluru & IIT Bombay — to develop quantum computing fabrication

IIT Delhi — to drive quantum materials and device development

These capabilities will support indigenous prototyping, translational research, and talent development, creating a pipeline of next-generation quantum hardware experts.

Strengthening Deep-Tech and Medical-Tech Synergy

The Minister stated that rapid advancements in non-invasive medical diagnostics, advanced imaging, and physics-driven therapeutics are directly linked to emerging quantum technologies. He hinted that future medical education may include physics as a core subject, reflecting interdisciplinary evolution.

He also praised IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, and IISc for building integrated research ecosystems bridging engineering, healthcare, and innovation.

Collaborative Future Vision

Dr. Singh stressed the importance of breaking silos and increasing cooperation between major national institutions. He cited multi-institutional MoUs initiated between IITs, AIIMS, IIMs, CSIR Labs, and communication institutes to improve:

Market deployment of research

Industry partnerships

Outreach to students, farmers, and start-ups

The Minister reaffirmed that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India became one of the earliest nations to launch a National Quantum Mission, underlining the government’s commitment to “embracing disruptive technologies for national growth.”
