India’s largest low-cost carrier IndiGo has announced the resumption of direct flight services to China, marking the revival of air connectivity between the two nations after more than five years.
Starting October 26, 2025, IndiGo will launch daily non-stop flights from Kolkata to Guangzhou, operated by its fuel-efficient Airbus A320neo aircraft. Subject to regulatory approvals, the airline also plans to start a Delhi–Guangzhou service in the coming months.The development comes at a crucial time, following renewed diplomatic engagements between New Delhi and Beijing.

Why IndiGo is Resuming India China Flights
IndiGo previously operated flights to China but suspended them in early 2020 due to the pandemic and prolonged geopolitical tensions. The return of services follows the Ministry of External Affairs’ confirmation that direct passenger flights between designated cities would restart this month.
In a statement, IndiGo said:
> “The restart of services will not only boost tourism but also re-establish avenues for cross-border trade and business partnerships. Our past experience and partnerships in China will ensure a smooth resumption.”
Boost for Trade, Tourism, and Connectivity
China remains India’s largest bilateral trade partner, despite strained relations and a trade deficit of nearly $99.2 billion. Experts believe that restoring flights will:
1.Support business travel and faster movement of goods
2.Boost tourism by opening direct routes for leisure and cultural exchanges
3.Enhance diplomatic ties by signaling improved cooperation
During his recent visit to Beijing for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping. Both leaders agreed that India and China should act as “development partners, not rivals.”
