6.2 Earthquake Hits Japan:
A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck Japan’s Shimane and Tottori prefectures on Tuesday morning, briefly disrupting transport services but causing no reported injuries or tsunami threat, according to Japanese authorities and local media.
The tremor occurred at 10:18 a.m. local time, with its epicentre located in eastern Shimane Prefecture at a depth of approximately 10 kilometres, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said. The quake registered upper 5 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale, which ranges from 0 to 7.

Aftershocks Follow Initial Tremor
Following the main quake, the region experienced multiple aftershocks, increasing concerns among residents. A magnitude 5.1 tremor was recorded at 10:28 a.m., followed by another quake measuring around magnitude 5.4 at 10:37 a.m., according to official data.
Despite the strong shaking, the JMA confirmed that no tsunami warning or advisory had been issued, easing fears of coastal damage.
Shimane Nuclear Power Plant Declared Safe
Officials at the Shimane Nuclear Power Plant in Matsue city confirmed that no abnormalities or safety issues were detected following the earthquake. The facility continues to be closely monitored as part of Japan’s strict nuclear safety protocols.
Japan remains one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries, lying along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates meet.
Bullet Train Services Disrupted
The quake caused a temporary power outage, leading to the suspension of bullet train (Shinkansen) services in parts of western Japan.
According to JR West, operations on the Sanyo Shinkansen Line were halted between Okayama and Hiroshima stations. Services were expected to resume around 1 p.m., though delays were reported across other sections of the route.
Railway authorities said inspections were carried out immediately after the quake to ensure passenger safety.

No Casualties Reported
As of the latest updates, no injuries or fatalities have been reported. Emergency services and local administrations continue to assess the situation while advising residents to remain alert for potential aftershocks.
Recent Seismic Activity in Japan
The latest quake comes just days after another tremor on December 31, when a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan. That quake was felt in Morioka City but also caused no tsunami.
Japan experiences thousands of earthquakes annually, most of them minor, thanks to its advanced seismic monitoring systems.
