The decision was taken jointly by UWW, the Bahrain Olympic Committee, and the Bahrain Wrestling Federation due to the prevailing geopolitical situation and uncertainty in the Gulf region.

UWW Cites Regional Instability for Postponement

In an official statement released on Friday, UWW said the postponement came after “careful and responsible consideration” of the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.

According to the statement, concerns over regional stability, international travel, and the broader impact of the pending conflict involving the Gulf region played a major role in the decision.

“While Bahrain remains fully committed to hosting world-class sporting events, all parties believe that the safety, confidence, and overall experience of athletes, officials, delegations, partners, and fans must remain the highest priority,” the statement said.

Decision Taken Early to Ensure Proper Planning

UWW explained that the decision was made well in advance to allow enough time to identify a potential new host nation and ensure smooth organisation of the event.

The wrestling governing body stated that acting early and transparently was necessary instead of waiting until the final stages of preparation.

“As organisations dedicated to the growth and integrity of international sport, UWW, the Bahrain Olympic Committee, and the Bahrain Wrestling Federation believe it is important to make this decision with adequate time and transparency,” the statement added.

Officials said the early postponement would help maintain professional event planning standards while protecting the interests of athletes and the global wrestling community.

Wrestling Described as a Symbol of Unity and Peace

Despite the postponement, UWW stressed that sport continues to serve as a powerful symbol of peace and unity during periods of global uncertainty.

“Wrestling has always been more than competition. It is a bridge between nations, cultures, and people,” the statement noted.

“At a time when the world faces uncertainty and division, we are reminded that sport remains a universal language of peace, respect, and unity.”

The governing body also thanked athletes, coaches, national federations, officials, partners, and supporters worldwide for their understanding and continued support.

New Host Yet to Be Finalised

UWW confirmed that discussions regarding future dates and a possible replacement host nation are ongoing.

The organisation said further updates on the rescheduled championship and hosting considerations would be announced in due course.

The 2026 World Wrestling Championships are considered one of the biggest events on the international wrestling calendar and attract top wrestlers from across the globe.
