Trump Says Tariff Threats Forced Modi Into Ceasefire with Pakistan, India Refutes Claim

WASHINGTON|27 August 2025 |SKY LINK TIMES

Former US President Donald Trump has once again reiterated his controversial claim of playing a decisive role in brokering peace between India and Pakistan following military tensions earlier this year.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said he personally intervened in May, using tariff and trade threats to push Prime Minister Narendra Modi into agreeing to a ceasefire with Islamabad.

“I am talking to a very terrific man, Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. I said, ‘What’s going on with you and Pakistan? The hatred was tremendous.’ Within about five hours, it was done,” Trump recalled.

Trump’s Version of Events

Trump claimed that during heightened cross-border hostilities, which he described as on the verge of turning into a “nuclear war”, he warned New Delhi that the US would block trade deals and impose high tariffs unless India stopped the conflict.

I said, I don’t want to make a trade deal with you… You guys are going to end up in a nuclear war. Call me back tomorrow, but we’re not going to do any deals, or we’re going to put tariffs on you that are so high your head’s going to spin” he said.

The former president further asserted that his intervention led to a peace agreement within just five hours of his conversation with PM Modi. According to Trump, of the seven wars he claims to have “stopped” globally, four were settled using tariffs as leverage — including the India-Pakistan truce.

The war with India and Pakistan was the next level that was going to be a nuclear war. They already shot down seven jets. I told them you have 24 hours to settle it. They said, ‘Well, there’s no more war going on” Trump added.

India’s Strong Denial

India, however, has consistently dismissed Trump’s assertions. New Delhi has made it clear that no foreign leader, including Trump, played any role in the ceasefire arrangement with Pakistan.

Officials pointed out that the cessation of hostilities was achieved through direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself told Parliament that “no leader of any country asked India to stop its military exercise against Pakistan.”

A Pattern of Repeated Claims

Since May 10, when Trump first announced on social media that Washington had mediated a “full and immediate” ceasefire between India and Pakistan, he has repeated the claim more than 40 times at various public events.

On Monday, he went as far as to say that he prevented multiple wars worldwide through tariffs and trade threats. “If you want to fight and kill everybody, that’s okay, but I will charge you 100% tariffs when you trade with us. They all gave up,” he said.

Despite India’s repeated rebuttals, Trump continues to cite the India-Pakistan conflict as one of his major diplomatic achievements.
