Once a little-known state on India’s tourism map, Tripura is fast emerging as the new shining star of the Northeast. Tripura’s Tourism Record Growth in Tourist Arrivals

According to official data from the Tripura Tourism Department, domestic tourist arrivals jumped by 64% — from 36.6 million in 2023 to 60.1 million in 2024. Similarly, foreign tourist arrivals increased by 36%, rising from 0.67 million to 0.91 million in the same period. This remarkable growth has made Tripura the second-most visited state by foreign tourists in Northeast India, just after Sikkim.

Tourism Minister Sushanta Choudhary attributed this success to the combined efforts of the central and state governments. “Destinations that were neglected for years are now being revived, promoted, and made accessible through better infrastructure,” he said.

Double Engine Development Impacm

Under the double engine model, Tripura has seen the revival of long-stalled projects and the initiation of new ones. Minister Choudhary recently held meetings with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia to discuss upcoming tourism projects aimed at accelerating the state’s economic growth through travel and hospitality.

The government is also modernising tourist lodges and homestays, creating employment opportunities for local communities and strengthening the rural economy.

New Projects & Infrastructure Boost

Officials report that the surge in visitor numbers is largely due to improved road connectivity, better accommodation, and the promotion of cultural and eco-tourism sites.

A proposed ₹180-crore loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) is expected to further boost tourism infrastructure and make travel smoother for visitors.
