TRIPURA | SEPTEMBER 5,2025 | SKY LINK TIMES |
Tripura University, the lone central university of the state, has been making headlines recently—though not always for the right reasons. From ranking setbacks to fresh allegations of campus extortion, the institution is under both scrutiny and transition as it heads into the new academic session 2025-26.

Ranking Performance: NIRF vs IIRF
In the recently released National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, Tripura University failed to make it to the top 100 list of higher education institutions. It also missed a spot among the top central universities in the country, a disappointment for many who expected progress this year.
However, the university fared slightly better in the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) 2025, where it secured the 44th position among central universities. While this marks an improvement from last year, it remains the lowest-ranked central university in the Northeast region.
Campus Politics: ABVP vs SFI-TSU
The academic discussions were overshadowed by political tension on campus. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) lodged a police complaint against student organizations Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Tribal Students’ Union (TSU). The complaint alleged extortion activities within the campus, sparking debates over the influence of student politics on university life. Authorities are yet to announce the outcome of the inquiry.

Admissions for 2025-26: UG & PG Programs
Amidst these challenges, the university is pressing forward with its admissions for the 2025-26 academic year. Applications are now open for various undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The university has set August 25, 2025, as the last date for submission of forms. Students across the region are keenly watching, as Tripura University remains a preferred choice for affordable higher education in the Northeast.
Teaching Recruitment Drive
In addition to student admissions, Tripura University has also invited applications for teaching positions. This recruitment drive comes at a crucial time when the university is under pressure to strengthen its academic and research output. By bringing in new faculty members, the administration hopes to improve teaching quality and performance in national rankings.
Court Rebuke Over Negligence
Adding to its list of challenges, the university faced criticism from the judiciary. The High Court recently pulled up Tripura University for negligence in handling a case where an applicant was denied necessary certificates required for a higher post. The court imposed a fine on the university, terming the administration’s conduct as careless and unfair.
Looking Ahead
Tripura University finds itself at a crossroads. On one hand, it is making efforts to expand opportunities through admissions and faculty recruitment. On the other, it faces criticism over rankings, political controversies, and administrative lapses.
For students and stakeholders, the coming months will be crucial to see whether the university can overcome these setbacks and move toward building a stronger academic reputation, both regionally and nationally.
