Tripura Police Arrest Seven in Brutal Assault on Belonia OC During Puja Celebration

Belonia, Oct 27: In a shocking incident that has triggered statewide outrage, Tripura Police arrested seven people in connection with the brutal assault on Shibu Ranjan Dey, Officer-in-Charge of Belonia Police Station in South Tripura district.

According to official sources, the attack occurred when Belonia OC and his team intervened to stop a high-volume DJ performance during a late-night puja celebration. Despite repeated warnings from authorities, the organisers continued to play loud music beyond the permitted hours, violating Tripura High Court and Pollution Control Board guidelines.

Belonia OC Beaten by Club Members

Eyewitnesses said that the officer was forcibly dragged off the stage and beaten by several members of the organising club. The violent assault left him injured and hospitalised for treatment.
Police sources confirmed that the attackers included the club’s Secretary and members of the Puja Committee.

A video of the incident quickly went viral on social media, sparking anger among citizens and condemnation from all sections of society.


Case Registered Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023

Police registered a case under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, and all seven accused were arrested on Monday night.
Authorities are investigating whether the assault was premeditated and if more people were involved.

CM Saha Vows Strict Action

Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said that strict action will be taken against those responsible.
“Law and order violations will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” the Chief Minister stated during an event in Agartala.

The incident has also been strongly condemned by opposition parties, including the CPI(M) and Congress, who demanded exemplary punishment for the attackers.


DJ Menace and Noise Pollution Concerns

Legal experts highlighted that exceeding permitted sound limits constitutes noise pollution, punishable by fines, equipment seizure, and imprisonment.
While the “DJ menace” remained under control during Durga Puja, similar incidents reportedly resurfaced during Kali Puja and Diwali with the addition of firecrackers.

Authorities have been urged to strengthen monitoring and ensure compliance with sound restrictions to prevent recurrence of such law-and-order issues.
