The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has dismissed a complaint by Abul Islam, a resident of Nayanjala in Sonamura, who alleged that Kalamchoura police officers illegally detained him, humiliated him, and denied him basic necessities during custody.

The case stemmed from an October 2024 abduction incident that had escalated communal tensions in the locality. According to the complaint, on October 23, 2024, Officer-in-Charge Naru Gopal Deb and Inspector Shyam Sankar Reang allegedly verbally abused Islam and detained him for not revealing the whereabouts of his son, Faruk Islam — accused by local resident Swapan Das of abducting his 19-year-old daughter, Jimpi Das.
Islam claimed he was called derogatory names, questioned in offensive slang, and denied food, water, and bedding despite falling ill in custody.
However, the THRC investigation found that the detention took place amid rising Hindu–Muslim tensions, with local groups branding the incident as a case of “Love Jihad.” The Commission concluded that the police acted to prevent further violence and to locate the missing girl, a Hindu woman who had eloped with a Muslim man.
While acknowledging instances of “harsh behavior” during questioning, the Commission ruled these actions were procedural. No audio or video evidence supported the allegations of communal slurs. Islam later withdrew his complaint, citing emotional distress rather than coercion.
Following a full review, the THRC determined the police officers’ actions were not unlawful and closed the case, directing the decision to be communicated to both Islam and the Sepahijala district Superintendent of Police
