A Strategic Move to Support Farmers and Boost Exports

With organic products gaining traction across India and international markets, Tripura has increased its focus on expanding organic cultivation. Among these crops, organic black rice—locally known as Kalikhasa—has emerged as one of the most sought-after varieties due to its high nutritional value and export potential.

This year, farmers have cultivated black rice seeds over 60 hectares across the state under the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North-East Region (MOVCDNER) Phase IV. The goal is to ensure both market-ready organic rice and high-quality seed production to support future farming cycles.

Officials said the initiative will help farmers benefit from premium pricing while also strengthening Tripura’s reputation as a leading organic producer in the North-East.

Ceremonial Launch at Koishenbari

The seed harvesting officially began at the Koishenbari area in Zirania Agricultural Subdivision, where a team of senior officials flagged off the collection process.

Present at the field were:

Rajiv Debbarma, Managing Director, MOVCDNER

Ranjit Kumar Das, Deputy Director, West District (Agriculture & Farmers Welfare)

Pinku Basal Debbarma, Assistant Director

Somen Kumar Das, Agricultural Superintendent, Zirania Subdivision

Along with other agriculture department staff

Officials interacted with local farmers and inspected the crops, emphasizing the importance of adopting organic methods and ensuring the purity of seed rice intended for future cultivation cycles.

Why Organic Black Rice Matters

Black rice is known for its antioxidant-rich composition, high fiber content, and immunity-boosting properties. Its rising demand in metros and international markets has made it an attractive crop for farmers seeking higher returns.

Tripura’s organic black rice is especially valued for its aroma and texture, making it a preferred choice for exporters and speciality food producers.

Strengthening Organic Value Chains

The MOVCDNER project aims to build a sustainable value chain—from seed production and cultivation to processing and marketing. Officials noted that the seed harvest marks a critical milestone, ensuring reliable supply for the next cultivation season and paving the way for expanding organic farmland in the years ahead.

With the state prioritizing organic farming, Tripura is expected to see increased participation from local farmers, improved soil health, and greater revenue through both domestic sales and export opportunities.
