A New Chapter in Seychelles’ Diplomacy
Barry Faure’s appointment comes as part of the new government formation following Patrick Herminie’s swearing-in as the sixth President of Seychelles in October. The ceremony at Unity Stadium was attended by India’s Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, who represented New Delhi and conveyed greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
During the visit, Vice President Radhakrishnan held meetings with President Herminie and Vice President Sebastien Pillay at the State House in Victoria, emphasizing India’s commitment to strengthening cooperation in maritime security, trade, climate resilience, and people-to-people exchanges.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Jaishankar’s message comes as both nations continue to bolster their diplomatic and strategic engagement in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) — an area of mutual interest for ensuring peace, stability, and maritime security.
India has consistently maintained strong cooperation with Seychelles in areas such as defence, maritime surveillance, capacity building, and healthcare, underlining its “Neighbourhood First” and “Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR)” policies.
Shared Vision for the Indian Ocean and Global South
According to the Vice President’s Office, both nations reaffirmed their shared vision for peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region and the Global South. India and Seychelles have consistently collaborated on regional security and development projects under initiatives like India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region).
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted that the discussions with Seychelles’ leadership reflected the multi-faceted nature of the India–Seychelles relationship, rooted in shared cultural and historical ties.

Recent Diplomatic Engagements
In October 2025, Patrick Herminie was sworn in as the sixth President of Seychelles at Unity Stadium. Representing India, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan attended the swearing-in ceremony and held meetings with the newly elected President and Vice President Sebastien Pillay.
During those interactions, both sides reaffirmed their shared vision for peace, prosperity, and development across the Indian Ocean and the broader Global South. The Vice President also conveyed India’s best wishes and highlighted opportunities to enhance cooperation in trade, tourism, and renewable energy.
A Historic Partnership
Diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles date back to 1976, immediately after Seychelles gained independence.
An Indian Navy contingent from INS Nilgiri took part in the country’s Independence Day celebrations that year, marking the beginning of a long-standing friendship.
India established its diplomatic mission in Victoria in 1979, and Seychelles opened its resident mission in New Delhi in 2008 — strengthening cultural and people-to-people ties over the decades.
