The leaders also reviewed bilateral cooperation and agreed to further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia.

Earlier, India had welcomed the Alaska Summit between Putin and Trump, calling their leadership in pursuit of peace “highly commendable.” The Ministry of External Affairs stressed that the world wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine.

Key Highlights of the Alaska Summit:

  • The meeting was held at the Arctic Warrior Convention Centre in Anchorage.
  • Attendees included Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
  • Talks lasted three hours, with both sides reporting progress.
  • However, no immediate ceasefire was announced.
  • Trump later told Fox News: “It’s not a done deal at all. And Ukraine has to agree. President Zelensky has to agree.”

This was Putin’s second call to PM Modi in ten days. On August 8, the Russian President had also briefed him on discussions with the US envoy in Moscow.

Looking ahead, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Moscow on August 21 for the 26th session of the Intergovernmental Russian-Indian Commission, where both nations will review trade, economic, and strategic cooperation.
