Defence Indigenisation at the Core
Since taking office in 2014, PM Modi has spent nearly every Diwali with India’s armed forces — from the Siachen Glacier to the Indian Ocean. This year’s address aboard the indigenously built aircraft carrier symbolised India’s journey toward ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Vocal for Local’ defence manufacturing.
“The day India received the Swadeshi INS Vikrant, our Indian Navy discarded a major symbol of colonial subjugation,” Modi stated, recalling the adoption of the Navy’s new flag inspired by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Policy and Emotion in Perfect Harmony
In his speech, the Prime Minister tied together themes of national self-reliance, visible delivery, and results-oriented governance — all underscored by heartfelt emotion. “Your toil, your selfless devotion, and dedication are at too great heights,” he said, addressing the sailors affectionately as “sea warriors.”
Modi also spent the night on board INS Vikrant, sharing songs, stories, and camaraderie with the Navy personnel — reflecting his personal style of leadership rooted in empathy and engagement.

Honouring Maritime Guardians
Referencing ‘Operation Sindoor’, a recent coordinated response to cross-border terrorism, the Prime Minister praised the synergy among India’s three armed services. “The extraordinary coordination among the services compelled Pakistan to surrender during Operation Sindoor,” he stated.
He also underlined the Navy’s strategic importance: “Fifty per cent of the world’s container ships pass through the Indian Ocean. Our Navy is the guardian keeping this route safe.”
A Poetic and Patriotic Reflection
In a rare poetic moment, Modi described the serene yet powerful setting:
> “On one side I have infinite horizons and the infinite sky, on the other, the giant INS Vikrant — embodying infinite power. The sun’s glow on the ocean feels like Diwali lamps lit by brave soldiers.”
His reflections seamlessly merged patriotism, natural imagery, and policy direction, turning the occasion into a symbolic celebration of India’s strength and unity.
