Navi Mumbai International Airport:
PM Modi today inaugurated the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), marking a landmark moment in India’s aviation journey. The state-of-the-art greenfield airport—spread across 1,160 hectares and developed at a cost of ₹19,650 crore—is set to become one of the country’s most advanced and eco-friendly transport hubs.

The inauguration signifies a major leap in infrastructure and will help decongest Mumbai’s existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).

Domestic Flights from December, International by Early 2026
According to official sources, domestic flight operations from NMIA will begin in the first week of December 2025, followed by international flights within two months. The airport features two parallel runways, with one already operational, and parking for up to 350 aircraft.
An integrated terminal system will ensure smooth passenger transfers between domestic and international terminals, while AI-powered operations will enhance efficiency and security.
Digital, Smart & Green: India’s Future-Ready Airport
NMIA is designed as one of India’s most eco-conscious airports, prioritizing renewable energy, water conservation, and sustainable construction practices. The terminal will showcase India’s cultural heritage through immersive digital art installations.
Passengers will enjoy next-generation features such as direct metro check-in, end-to-end baggage management via the “One-Up” app, and real-time flight updates through integrated digital platforms.
Boosting Connectivity & Regional Growth
Connectivity improvements are underway to seamlessly link the airport with key parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
A new road connecting Atal Setu to Kosthal Road is being constructed, and Metro Line 8—linking NMIA with CSMIA—is expected to receive approval soon. Additionally, a water taxi service will enhance access from Mumbai’s coastal zones.
Once fully operational, NMIA and CSMIA will together form a multi-airport system capable of handling up to 150 million passengers annually, positioning Mumbai among the world’s leading aviation hubs.

In its first phase, the airport will accommodate 20 million passengers and 0.5 million metric tonnes of cargo annually. The project is jointly owned by Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd, comprising MIAL (74%) and CIDCO (26%). The DGCA granted NMIA its Aerodrome License on September 30, 2025.
A Symbol of Progressive India
With its blend of technology, sustainability, and connectivity, NMIA stands as a symbol of India’s modern infrastructure vision under the Make in India and Green India initiatives. The airport’s inauguration represents not just a regional milestone but a national achievement in sustainable growth and smart urban development.
