Why the Buddha Piprahwa Relics Are Historically Significant
Discovered in 1898, the Piprahwa relics are regarded as among the earliest and most authentic archaeological deposits linked to Bhagwan Buddha. Archaeological evidence connects the Piprahwa site to ancient Kapilavastu, believed to be the place where Gautam Buddha spent his early life before renouncing worldly pursuits.
According to official sources, these relics occupy a pivotal place in the study of early Buddhism and its spread across Asia.
Relics Repatriated After More Than a Century
Highlighting the importance of the exhibition, Prime Minister Modi noted that it features Piprahwa relics repatriated after more than 100 years, alongside authentic archaeological materials preserved at the National Museum, New Delhi, and the Indian Museum, Kolkata.
The successful return of these sacred artefacts has been made possible through sustained government efforts, institutional collaboration, and innovative public-private partnerships.
