Netanyahu’s Gaza Takeover Plan Gets Israeli Security Cabinet Approval

Jerusalem | August 8, 2025 |  Sky Link Times

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s proposal for a full takeover of Gaza City has been approved by the Israeli security cabinet, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) cited by Times of Israel.

The plan — which comes amid one of the worst humanitarian crises in Gaza’s history — seeks to extend Israeli control over the remaining parts of the territory it does not already occupy. Israel currently holds around three-quarters of Gaza.

Netanyahu said the move was necessary to “ensure our security” and to dismantle Hamas.

“We intend to, in order to assure our security, remove Hamas there… We want to hand it over to Arab forces that will govern it properly without threatening us and giving Gazans a good life,” Netanyahu told Fox News, stressing that Israel does not intend to govern Gaza long-term.

Hamas: Plan Is a Coup

Hamas denounced the approval, calling it a “coup” aimed at escalating the conflict.

“Netanyahu’s plans to escalate the aggression confirm beyond any doubt his desire to get rid of the captives and sacrifice them in pursuit of his personal interests and extremist ideological agenda,” Hamas said in a statement.

Humanitarian Crisis Worsens

The decision comes as UN agencies warn of looming famine in Gaza, where food aid sites have been repeatedly attacked. According to Gaza officials, Israeli forces have opened fire on crowds at humanitarian distribution points multiple times since May, following the lifting of a 2½-month blockade.

Hundreds have been killed in recent weeks while heading to Gaza’s health ministry facilities, further straining an already dire humanitarian situation.
