The nation today solemnly observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, paying tribute to the millions who lost their lives or were displaced during the Partition of India in 1947.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah remembered the victims, recalling the violence, displacement, and exploitation caused by the division of the country. In a post on X, Shah said, “The Congress party’s decision to divide the nation inflicted atrocities and forced millions to abandon their homes. The country will never forget this history and pain of Partition.”

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan described August 14, 1947, as a symbol of “deep pain and immense loss,” calling Partition “one of the most painful events in human civilisation” that separated countless people from loved ones and homeland. He said the day serves as a reminder of the destructive consequences of hatred, while inspiring unity, brotherhood, and compassion.
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal paid homage to the victims, stating that the day not only honours their sacrifices but also makes future generations aware of the suffering endured.
External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar highlighted the “far-reaching human and strategic consequences” of Partition and lauded the resilience of those who lived through the tragedy, urging the nation to learn from this painful chapter in history.
BJP President and Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda stressed the importance of national unity, calling the tradition of observing Partition Horrors Remembrance Day under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership a significant step in nation-building.
Every year on August 14, Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is observed to honour those who perished and remember the millions uprooted from their homes during the 1947 Partition — one of the largest and most tragic migrations in human history.
