Strengthening the Strategic Partnership
The bilateral meeting between Narendra Modi and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva focused on reviewing the entire spectrum of India-Brazil relations.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two leaders discussed expanding cooperation in:
• Trade and investment
• Defence collaboration
• Renewable energy and critical minerals
• Agriculture and pharmaceuticals
• Science, technology, AI and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)
• Space cooperation
They also exchanged views on regional and global developments, including UN reforms, climate change, combating terrorism, and issues concerning the Global South.
India and Brazil have shared a Strategic Partnership since 2006, rooted in democratic values and strong people-to-people ties.
Jaishankar Meets Lula, Expresses Confidence
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also called on President Lula ahead of the bilateral talks.
In a post on X, Jaishankar said he was “honoured” to meet the Brazilian leader and appreciated his guidance in advancing the strategic partnership. He expressed confidence that Lula’s engagements with Prime Minister Modi would impart new momentum to bilateral ties.
AI Summit & Multilateral Cooperation
President Lula arrived in India on February 18 to attend the 2nd AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. He is accompanied by around 14 ministers and a large delegation of leading Brazilian CEOs, signaling the importance Brazil places on economic and technological collaboration with India.
The leaders discussed cooperation in multilateral forums such as the G20 and emphasized the need for reformed multilateralism and stronger global governance structures.
Both leaders have maintained frequent engagements. PM Modi visited Brasilia on a State Visit in July 2025 — the first such visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. The two also met during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg in November 2025.

Why This Visit Matters
Brazil is India’s largest trading partner in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region. Bilateral engagement has deepened across sectors including renewables, rare earth materials, space, AI, and critical minerals — areas crucial for future economic growth.
The MEA highlighted that President Lula’s State Visit provides an opportunity to chart a forward-looking agenda and further strengthen bilateral cooperation at regional and global platforms.
With both nations advocating stronger representation for developing countries in global decision-making, the Modi–Lula talks could reshape the trajectory of Global South cooperation in the coming years.
