The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting held earlier this week in Shillong.

The move will impact nurses who were appointed to the posts of Staff Nurse and Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) on an ad hoc basis prior to December 2007. Despite being appointed against sanctioned posts, these nurses had not been formally regularised for over a decade.

A Step Toward Fairness and Parity

According to government sources, the Cabinet’s decision applies the same principles used for the regularisation of other state employees in similar situations. The move ensures parity and fairness across the healthcare workforce, giving due recognition to nurses who have served consistently for years.

“The decision to regularise nurses who were appointed before December 2007 reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring justice and equality for all eligible staff,” said a senior official from the Health Department.

The regularisation will grant the nurses permanent employee status, along with all related benefits such as job security, promotions, and pension entitlements.

Boost for the Nursing Workforce

Healthcare experts have hailed the Cabinet’s move as a morale booster for Meghalaya’s nursing community. With better job security and improved benefits, the nurses are expected to contribute even more effectively to the state’s healthcare delivery system.

“This is a positive step toward acknowledging the dedication of our frontline workers. Regularisation brings not just financial stability but also dignity and respect,” said a representative of the Meghalaya Nurses Association.

Meghalaya Govt Strengthening Health System

The regularisation aligns with Meghalaya’s broader goal of improving public health services across urban and rural areas. The state government has been focusing on filling critical staff shortages in hospitals and primary health centres.

By securing the employment of long-serving nurses, the government aims to create a more stable and motivated workforce capable of addressing healthcare challenges effectively.

With this decision, Meghalaya joins a growing list of Indian states prioritising the welfare of healthcare professionals who played a crucial role during public health crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
