MUMBAI। AUGUST 23,2025। SKY LINK TIMES।
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is all praise for actor Bobby Deol, who stars in his upcoming film Bandar (Monkey in a Cage). The movie, which also features Sanya Malhotra, will have its world premiere at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), scheduled between September 4 and 14, 2025.

In a recent interview with Sudhir Srinivasan on his YouTube channel, Kashyap opened up about working with Bobby and how the actor surrendered himself completely to the role.
“He is so vulnerable and emotionally naked”
Kashyap shared, “A complete surrender for somebody who’s been a star for the longest period of his time, then he has seen a total lull, and then when he’s getting all kinds of big mainstream movies, he picks Bandar and says, ‘I want to do it.’ Because he’s thinking, ‘I’ve never been asked to just be vulnerable.’ He’s so vulnerable in the film, so emotionally naked. Every single scene he has performed is with such fantastic actors.”
According to Kashyap, Bandar is packed with talent—“The film is full of theatre actors, great actors from all languages, five National Award winners. Every scene Bobby is in, he’s sharing space with someone incredible.”
Not just a star-driven film
Calling it a character-driven study, Kashyap revealed that Bandar does not feature any “junior artists.” Instead, it is backed by a strong ensemble cast, including Raj B Shetty, Riddhi Sen, Saba Azad, Sanya Malhotra, Jitendra Joshi, Nagesh Bhonsle, Sukant Goel, and Ankush Gedam.

He added, “There are no junior artists in the film. They’re all theatre actors, some hundred theatre actors. But Bobby is so vulnerable and put himself through it.”
Bobby Deol shares first glimpse
Ahead of the festival, Bobby Deol shared his intense first look from the film on Instagram, writing:
“The story that should not have been told… But is the Official Selection at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival 2025. Our film, inspired from true events, is premiering at #tiff50.”
Why Bandar matters
Bandar marks yet another bold move in Bobby Deol’s career resurgence. After years of setbacks and lulls, the actor has been making headlines with powerful performances in mainstream hits as well as unconventional projects. Kashyap’s film, inspired by true events, seems to continue that journey—pushing him into more vulnerable, layered spaces as an actor.
With its TIFF premiere, the film not only puts Indian cinema back on the global festival map but also highlights the growing trend of Bollywood stars collaborating with theatre-trained actors to create authentic, performance-driven cinema.
